Auschwitz was a concentration camp operated by the Third Reich. Today, it is a poignant reminder of the Nazi extermination of Jews and other crimes against humanity. The camp was established in 1940 in German-occupied Poland around 60 km west of Cracow. Auschwitz became the largest and most efficient killing machine of the Nazis. The largest gas chambers could hold 3000 people at any one time. Around 1.1 million people were exterminated in Auschwitz. When the Red Army arrived on 27 January 1945, only 7.650 prisoners were alive.
