Manhattan Project is the name of the secret, American atomic bomb project that took place during World War II under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves and the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The work took place in the Los Alamos lab in the New Mexico dessert. The first atomic bomb was Trinity, which was detonated in the dessert on 16 July 1945. On 6 and 9 August, two atomic bombs were dropped over the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Harry S. Truman took the decision.
