Dunkirk (Dunkerque in French) is a French harbour city by the English Channel. During World War II some 338,000 British and French soldiers were evacuated from the city to England in 1940. The Allied had lost the first battle and the Germans were progressing all over Europe. The city is actually called Duinkerke (dune church) in the local, Flemish language.
