An island is a land mass completely surrounded by water, which is smaller than a continent and larger than a stone. Islands may be located in the oceans, in lakes or in rivers. The size varies from small mud and sandy islands of a few square meters to Greenland, the biggest island covering two million square kilometers. Australia is even greater, but is considered to be a continent.
