Azerbaijan is a republic in southern Caucasus which borders the Caspian Sea. The country is a secular state and has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2001. The majority of the population is Shia Muslim and of western Turkish decent. The capital is called Baku, and the country has some 9 million inhabitants and covers an area of 86.632 km².
