Explanation
Barbados is a small island state in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. The country has around 300,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 430 km2. The capital is called Bridgetown. The island was uninhabited when the British first arrived on the island in 1627. They erected sugar plantations manned by slaves until 1834, when slavery was abolished. Barbados used to be a British colony but gained its independence in 1966.
