Botswana is a country in Southern Africa. The country has 2 million inhabitants and covers an area of 600,370 km². Before it became colonised the country was divided into several small kingdoms led by members of the Tswana tribe. The kingdoms were being threatened by outside powers and therefore agreed to a protectorate with the British. Botswana gained independence from Britain in 1966. The capital is called Gaborone.
