Italy is a republic in south-central Europe by the Mediterranean Sea. Around 60 million people live in the country which covers an area of 301,230 km². Because of the country's shape it is sometimes known as the 'boot country'. Italy used to be split into several small states, but was united under the Sardinian King Victor Emanuel 2 in 1861. Italy was a founding member of the Europen Community, the front-runner to the EU.
