Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390 near Maastricht - 1441 in Bruges) was a Flemish paint. Flanders was one of the main centers of the Renaissance movement in the 14th century, when paintings of above all sacred motifs of symbolic importance were painted with a painstaking attention to detail. Van Eyck was among the most prominent figures in Flemish painting ("the Flemish Primitivists") and known for his alter at Ghent (1432) and the paintings "The Arnolfini Portrait" (1434) and "Madonna of Chancellor Rollin" (1434-1436).
