Tonga is a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Tonga is made up of 169 islands, of which 36 are inhabited. The country has some 115,000 inhabitants. The capital is called Nuku'alofa. In 1900 Tonga became a British protectorate, and the country only gained its independence in 1970. Tonga is the only monarchy in the Pacific Ocean.
