Haiti is a Caribbean country, which occupies the western 1/3 portion of the island Hispaniola. The country has around 10 million inhabitants and an area of around 27.750 km2. The capital is called Port-au-Prince. It is a former French colony and declared its independence in 1804. The official languages are French and Haitian Creole. It is a Christian country, but Haitian Voodoo is also widely practised. In 2010, Haiti was hit by a major earthquake.
