The Republic of Cuba is a Spanish-speaking island nation in the northern Caribbean. The country has around 11 milion inhabitants and covers an area of 109,886 km2. The capital is Havana, which is also the most populous city in the Caribbean. In 1492, Christopher Columbus declared Cuba Spanish territory. The country gained independence in 1902. A revolutionary army led by Fidel Castro overthrew then president Fulgencio Batista in 1959 and made the country Communist.
