Explanation
The Galápagos islands are 19 volcanic islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean. They lie around 1000 km west of Ecuador, which they belong to. The islands are particularly well known for their unique fauna which amongst other things helped Charles Darwin develop his theory around the origin of species. The islands are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and are thought to be between 1 and 3 million years old.
