George Clooney played in the film 'Solaris' from 2002, but who directed the original film from 1972, upon which the remake is based?

Explanation

If Sergei Eistenstein was the king of Russian/Soviet film, then Andrey Tarkovskiy was definitely the crown prince. Tarkovskiy's films have inspired many other directors, including Lars von Trier, who also dedicated his film 'Antichrist' to the memory of Tarkovskiy. His breakthrough film was 'Ivan's childhood' (Ivanovo destvo) from 1962, but he gained more success in the 1970s with films such as 'The Mirror' and 'Solaris', of which an American remake was made in 2002, featuring George Clooney. Tarkovskyi died in 1986, only 54 years old.
