Alexander Graham Bell is often considered the inventor of the telephone. He built and patented his version of the telephone in 1876. Others attribute the invention to Philipp Reis, in 1860. In 2002 the US Congress acknowledged the Italian-American Antonio Meucci as the true inventor of the telephone. He constructed his first device around 1849.
